Default Couple Questions

I posted this in the new player thread on this forum but I guess noone noticed it so I am posting it as a seperate thread(thank you to anyone who can help):

I just purchased Guild Wars today, I am a past player of EQ and WoW(and ive tried DAoC, AO, and FFXI). I have a couple questions which i seem to be unable to find answers to in my research.

1) Secondary profession - are there any negatives to choosing a secondary profession? ie if i were a warrior and chose necro or some other caster class would i say hit softer than a pure warrior? i assume that primary class determines your melee/casting abilities so i guess im wondering if the secondary profession has an effect on that(whether positive or negative)....if there is no negative impact it seems like there would never be a reason for a person to not pick up a seconday class....

2) equipment - i am wondering whether the game is very equipment dependent or not...ie does someone who is very well equipped automatically destroy someone not so well equipped?....i guess this is also dependent on whether it is difficult to get the best items in the game? or are all lvl 20s similarly equipped?

3) PvP battle sizes - after entering the game i was somewhat disapointed that the only 2 pvp options were for 4 and 8 man teams...i was hoping for a much larger scale....so there in lies my question...how large scale is guild pvp...is it limited...or can it get up to something like 50 vs 50?

4) combat log - is there someway to have a text display of the events of a battle(like most mmorpg games)?

thanks for your time

There are no negatives to picking up a secondary class. Infact it's a positve effect. Everything in this game is based upon attributes, which will determine how good the skills you use. And can be just as powerful as your main profession if you spend points into those attributes.

The equipment in this game is nothing like WoW for example. You can go to the deepest darkest dungeon and you won't find a single piece of equippable armor. Once you hit Droknar's Forge, you have access to the best armor just as everyone does. As for weapons, they're a little harder to get the best, but even when you have the best it won't make you unstoppable. It'll just give you a small edge over other people.
So ya, I guess you could say all the Lv.20s are similarly equipped.

Unfortunately, you can only have an 8 man team at most going in pvp. And the largest battle you can have are eight teams of eight going against eachother.
This is one situation I just cringe at. I do miss those open large battles from WoW.

No There are no battle logs of damage, misses, dodges etc. I did miss it at one time, but I've gotten used to it.

There is no negative for a secondary profession. In fact, if you want to play through the PvE part of the game you must have a secondary profession. The professions you pick will decide what spells, skills, etc that you have access too as well as what attributes you get.

Each profession has a number of "common" attributes and 1 "primary" attribute. you can only get a primary attribute for a profession if that is your main profession. You will only get the common attributes if the profession is your secondary profession.

Like in your example a Warrior/Necromancer would get the warrior's primary attribute "Strength" as well as the comon attributes of Swordsmanship, Axe Mastery, Hammer Mastery and Tactics. From the Necromancers side they would get the attributes of Curses, Blood Magic & Death magic.. but they would not get "Soul Reaping, as SR is Necromancers primary attribute.

There basically is no reason not to want a 2nd profession really. Some might argue it's more "chalanging" to play as only 1 profession.. or they might say they like the "look" of only having 1 profession *shrugs* but basically game wise it's all benefits to have a secondary profession - because it gives you access to skills, spells, etc of a second class and thus means you are far more able to counter and/or cope with any given fight/situation.

Early on equipment can make a difference if your trying to compete in the low level pvp area's and they have high level armor. however, equipment isn't the be all and end all like it is in other games. What skills your have on your skill bar, when you use them & how you use them detirmine exactly how good or bad you will do.

Like early pvp area's are limited to level 10, but some people pay gold to get rushed to the final armor forging place to get the best armor and come back and "pwn" in the low level pvp area - however a good team with the right skills and knowledge on how to deal with people like that should be able to easily beat them. Just a pity the Ascalon arena is random grouping (I believe)

but later on when you get to places like Tombs, Competition arena's & Hall of Heroe's you'll find that everyone will have approximately the same level of equipment that you have and then it comes down to what skills/spells/signets/etc you have on your skill bar, how well you can use them and how well you can work with your team/group. In the end it comes down to "skill" more than equipment since by the end, everyone either has or has access to equpment which is all equivalant to each other really.

sure there are differences between them all, but then the game would be really boring if each profession's end armor had the exact same stats, strength's, weaknesses, etc.

the only options for PvP iirc is 4v4, 8v8, 8v8v8 & 8v8v8v8 .. but their might be other options/possibilities. I've not PvP'ed much, so can't relaly answer this. However I do know that the game is not geared to or allows huge scale PvP like you mention.

Good question. I don't know if there is a way to do that. Basically what I fdo is keep track of the numbers floating over my head and the enemies heads as well as what hexes & enchantments I have and what the enemy I've selected is casting.. as well as trying to remember what each critter can do. SAltho that works for PvE, I don't know how well that would work in PvP...

for question's 3 & 4 someone else will probably have a better answer. I hope I helped in some way tho

Not 100% true as you can't equip runes for your secondary attribute line. In other words, if you are a warrior/monk you can use warrior runes but you can't use monk runes. Thus you can't ever have 16 healing or protection prayers whereas a primary monk can. But in general as everyone has said previously there is no penalty for taking a secondary class. However, you do want to put a little thought into WHICH secondary class you take as that will effect you until you can change it. Even then it effects which skills you will be unlocking up to the desert if you're interested in PvP at some point.

There are 3 main types of PvP

1) Tombs: tournament style matches which progress in difficulty. (8v8 all the way up to 8v8v8v8v8v8v8v8). Types of maps include capture the relic (i.e., flag), king of the hill (also known as Dais maps), 1 on 1 melee, and free for all melee.
2) Competition Arenas: 4v4 team combat. The matches are for the most part kill the other team. If you win you keep going and play another team.
3) GvG: 8v8 guild verse guild combat. To win you are required to kill the opposing teams guild lord which is defended a guild of 8 players and a bunch of NPC's. GvG is very different from Tombs and Arena despite being 8v8.

If you press "o" (the letter) while in any PvP area it will display a graph of all the teams health and morale. Can be fun to watch and also is a great way to scout out enemy teams.

thanks for all the help guys....answered all my questions very well....

so a couple of you mentioned something like 8v8v8v8... so that means there are multiple teams of 8 all duking it out at once in the same area? that actually sounds pretty awesome....
